SCR Medical Transportation provides paratransit services intended for mobility-challenged individuals. The Company offers origin-to-destination transportation through full-service reservations, non-emergency medical transportation and private-pay transportation including wheelchair accessible vehicles. In 1995, SCR entered into a contract with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) to transport disabled people who could not use its regular public transit system. On July 14, that year, a SCR driver named Robert Britton was transporting a woman with cerebral palsy, Esperanza Banda, from Michael Reese Hospital to her home. She accused Britton of sexually assaulting her in his vehicle and then entering her home and attempting to do so again. Britton was convicted of the crimes in the related criminal case.
For the past 20 years, SCR’s fleet has consisted of structurally-modified low-floor minivans and some body-on-chassis buses. But these models are limited in side-door opening dimensions, especially when it comes to comfortably accommodating bariatric wheelchairs.
Pamela and Stanley Rakestraw, owners of SCR, understand the importance of offering the best possible mobility equipment to their clients. They’ve worked closely with Fenton Mobility, the family-owned business that designs and manufactures AbiliTrax products, to ensure that their drivers have the very best mobility vans available. In 2017, at Justin and London’s urging, SCR added 15 Ford Transit vans upfitted with AbiliTrax products to its fleet. These units are now helping to connect many more clients to the services they need.
