When you’re in the transportation industry, it’s important to know about all of the different acronyms that are used. From the BOL to TONU, there are a lot of terms that can be confusing. We’ve put together this list of abbreviation for transportation to help you with all of the lingo.
A centralized system that allows for the seamless transfer of freight from multiple modes of transport (e.g., rail to truck). Transshipping may include transferring a hazardous material from one type of bulk packaging to another, or a non-bulk package to a bulk package for the purpose of continuing the movement of the material in commerce.
The weight of a shipment on a per-mile basis. This is often outlined on the trucking company’s bill of lading and can vary depending on a number of factors.
A two- or four-letter code that is assigned to freight carriers by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association and that serves as a unique identifier for each carrier. The NCAC is used to identify the specific carrier within the industry and allows trucking companies and brokerages to track shipments on a granular level.
