Converting Square Feet to Acres

June 14, 2023

If you’re evaluating land for sale, chances are you will encounter lots that have been described as being 0.5 acre or more. The standard unit of measure for such a lot is the acre, which equals 43,560 square feet. To help you determine how big the land is, it’s good to know how to convert square footage to acres.

A square foot is a measurement of surface area that can be used to quantify how much space something takes up, and it’s a term commonly used in real estate and other areas where property size is relevant. It’s also the unit of measurement used by a lot of calculators. There are other ways to calculate surface area, including square miles and acres, but square feet are the most common measure of land in the United States.

The acre is a unit of measurement that is commonly used in the United States and other countries that follow the Imperial system of units. While it’s not as universally recognized as inches, feet, yards and miles, the acre is still an important unit of measurement.

To understand why it’s more useful to use acres than other units of measure such as square miles, consider this: The acre assumes an artificially flat and totally horizontal measure of the ground. If you are evaluating land that has hills or slopes, it’s helpful to be able to know how many more square feet of ground are in an acre than in a flat acre of the same size.
