When it comes to accessing health care, transportation is a critical barrier that many seniors face. It’s estimated that each year 3.6 million Americans miss or delay medical appointments because of issues with transportation. That’s why more and more Medicare Advantage plans are offering non-emergency transportation coverage as an additional benefit.

Original Medicare covers ambulance transport if it’s deemed medically necessary and your doctor believes that traveling any other way would endanger your health. Some Medicare Advantage Plans may cover nonemergency transportation as a part of your Medicare benefits, based on a pre-service organization determination that is provided to you by Humana.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) are offered by private insurers like Humana and are required to offer all the benefits of Original Medicare, plus some extra benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans include transportation as an added benefit, typically with limited one-way trips and prior authorization.

Humana is working to provide members with even more options for transportation. For example, in 2022, we’re expanding our partnership with Lyft to bring more affordable, convenient transportation options to our members. These updates are just another way that we’re committed to helping people stay connected to their healthcare and their community.
