The Gulf Stream (GS) has been correlated to coastal sea level rise in previous studies. This is because a change in GS surface-layer transport at a specific location is geostrophically balanced by a corresponding change in cross-stream sea level at the same location. We show, however, that this relationship is not valid north of Cape Hatteras. Consequently, it is unlikely that the GS contributes to coastal sea level rise on the U.S. East Coast north of this cape.
