How To Adjust Straps on a Britax Car Seat

The harness system in a child car seat is designed to keep your child snug in the car seat’s shell and protect them from injury in an impact. The harness distributes the force of the crash over 5 points – two at the shoulders, two at the hips, and one where the harness buckles between the legs.

While the shoulder straps on most BRITAX car seats are easy to loosen and tighten, it’s important to periodically check them during rides as they can become too tight over time from shifting or stretching of materials. Loose harness straps can leave your child vulnerable to injury and also allow them to move around in the car seat, potentially causing them discomfort.

Many BRITAX car seats are designed with a convenient red button that can be pressed to easily loosen the shoulder straps. You can then adjust them to a snug fit against your child’s chest. Make sure there is no more than a finger width of space between the shoulder strap and your child’s collar bone for optimal safety.

In addition to the shoulder straps, most BRITAX car seats have waist belt buckle adjusters that can be used to loosen the straps and make them easier to pull tight again later. To use the adjuster, locate the buckle on either side of the waist belt and push down on the strap adjuster button. Then, slide the harness belt adjuster up to increase slack and test for a snug fit against your child’s torso (not neck) before releasing the adjustment button.
