How to Change a Tesla Car Name

December 23, 2023

For those who are fortunate enough to have a Tesla Model 3, X or Y in their garage, there is the option to imbue it with a unique name that can then be displayed both on the car’s dashboard and in the Tesla app. This allows owners to better keep track of notifications and services that are a part of their vehicles, and also helps to avoid confusion when referring to the vehicle amongst other drivers.

Changing the car’s name is a fairly straightforward process that doesn’t require the help of a mechanic or even Tesla customer support (although, depending on the situation, you may have to prove your ownership). Simply access the car’s dashboard and either tap the ‘Car’ icon found along the bottom navigation or open the Tesla app and navigate to the Software tab. This will reveal a wealth of important information including the hardware your car is equipped with, any subscriptions you possess and the current software version.

If you are not satisfied with the default name, or just want to have a bit of fun, you can use some of the many online resources available that offer inspiration for a truly one-of-a-kind Tesla name. Some of these include names inspired by movies, tv shows, comics and novels. You can also find names based on your favorite hobbies or even your children’s personalities.

As a bonus, some of these witty names are able to unlock special Easter eggs in the vehicle. For example, if you bestow your Tesla with a Monty Python-inspired moniker like “Biggus Dickus”, “Unladen Swallow” or the “Rabbit of Caerbannog”, the dashboard screen will change to display the foot of Cupid from the comedy sketch show.
