How to Tie a Mattress to a Car Roof Rack

March 11, 2024

Before transporting your mattress, take the time to prepare it properly. Clean it, elevate it, and wrap it in a protective covering to keep it safe from dirt, moisture, and potential damage. You'll also need to gather your supplies. Start by selecting high-quality ratchet straps or ropes that are appropriate for the size and weight of your mattress. Next, grab a non-slip mat and gloves for additional support and safety. Finally, double-check that your vehicle is able to accommodate the load, and be mindful of any height restrictions when approaching parking garages or low overpasses on your route.

Once you have everything you need, lift your mattress onto the roof of your car, positioning it lengthwise with one shorter side facing the front and one longer side facing the back. When tightening the straps, be sure to leave some slack to allow for adjustment and tensioning.

To secure your mattress, first position the end of one ratchet strap over the front of the mattress and under the front crossbar (or through the car, if you don't have a roof rack). Then, hook the other end of the rope or ratchet strap to the other end of the first strap, pulling it tight as you go.

Repeat this process with the remaining straps, being careful not to over-tighten them and risk damaging your mattress or car. Once you're finished, gently push and pull on the mattress to check for stability. If any movement is detected, retighten the straps as needed. And don't forget to secure any excess rope or ratchet straps to avoid them flapping during transit.
