How to Tighten USB Port in Car

January 29, 2024

In a car, USB ports are very important as they help you connect your device to the infotainment system and enable features like navigation using maps services, calling, audio and video streaming etc. However, a loose USB port can be a major hassle as it will stop your device from working properly. This is why, it's very important to fix the issue as soon as you notice that your usb port is wiggly or loose. The good news is that resolving this problem isn't too difficult and you can do it yourself without needing to pay for external repair.

This article will show you how to tighten your car's USB port using various methods. These methods include adjusting internal pins, cleaning the port, and even soldering the connections. We will also show you a simple trick that can be used as a temporary solution until you have time to repair it.

The First Step

Before you start working on the USB port, make sure that the vehicle is completely off and the battery disconnected. This will prevent electric shock and short circuits while you work on the wire connections.

In a standard Type-A USB port, there are small metal retaining clips on the top and bottom sides of the port that keep the USB plug in place when plugged in. Over time, these springy metal pieces can become flattened or bent, which can lead to a loose-fitting USB connection. In most cases, this can be corrected by gently jiggling the USB port to re-insert it. If this doesn't work, you may need to open the device and remove the port from its motherboard to resolder the pins.
