LCP is an important tool and process for agencies and stakeholders to utilize. It can be applied at the project or system level and provides a transparent and more informed way to evaluate alternatives. LCP is a valuable tool for decision makers, however, it should be used in response to each agency’s unique mission and mandate. Stakeholders are critical to crafting a tool and process that can meet the needs of their community.
A recent example of the application of LCP is a land use integration effort undertaken by ARTE in Portland, OR. This initiative aimed to minimize demand for car travel by influencing growth patterns. The goal was to create a more sustainable city by situating housing closer to employment and services and increasing density of the center of the city. The initiative was successful in reducing car trips and improving public transportation use.
