The Gary Public Transportation Corporation (GPTC) is proud to offer local bus service throughout the City of Gary and connections to 10 surrounding cities in NWI, including Hammond, Hobart, Griffith, Whiting, and Merrillville. Routes that begin with “L” charge local fares, while those that start with “R” charge regional fares. Transfers between local and regional buses are free.

GPTC is hosting a public hearing Thursday, April 6, to discuss changes to Lakeshore routes and service area expansion. GPTC is proposing to change route R1 Lakeshore Connection to expand service to north Hammond and Whiting, as well as to The Pavilion at Wolf Lake Memorial Park, Horseshoe Casino, and Calumet College of St. Joseph. It would also increase trips on R5 Lakeshore South to include stops at the GBMC/Hammond Clinic Area, Lake County Government Building, and Adam Benjamin Jr VA Outpatient Clinic. Lastly, it would replace the R6 Ivy Tech/South Broadway Shuttle with a new RBMX route to serve residential areas in Merrillville and connect with the existing GMX service. GPTC staff will also discuss improvements to the Broadway Metro Express and plan service for central Gary and Hobart, as well as the addition of bikeshare at selected bus stops.
