The Vail Transportation Center

August 9, 2023

Located across from the Covered Bridge in Vail Village, this five-story parking garage and transit center is home to both a bus terminal and information kiosk. A public plaza and landscaped hike-bike trail connect the facility with downtown restaurants, shops, and the Colorado Ski Heritage Center (1990, Michael Barber Architecture) whose exhibits trace skiing back to Scandinavia 2,000 years ago.

Currently, the Vail Transportation Center serves as the main transit hub for the Town of Vail. All nine Vail Transit routes and six ECO transit routes terminate at the Transportation Center along with Bustang, Pegasus, Greyhound and private shuttles. The facility is nearing capacity and the Town will be conducting a design project to develop it into a mobility hub to serve local and regional travel needs.

The Go Vail 2045 project kicked off in the Summer of 2022 and is performing analysis on walking, biking, and taking transit in our community. We heard from more than 275 people through an online survey, interactive map and in-person events. This input will inform the analysis and development of recommendations that will be implemented in 2024.

Traffic calming involves changes in street alignments, barriers, and other measures to reduce traffic speeds for safety, livability, or other public purposes. We are evaluating the effectiveness of existing traffic calming tools throughout the Town and considering new measures to address specific neighborhood concerns. The project team will also be evaluating residential speed data to identify opportunities for consistent, appropriate speed limits.
