things to do in biddeford me

Biddeford me is a charming town that is full of high-quality restaurants and shops. It also has beautiful beaches that locals and tourists enjoy spending time at.

The sand is soft and inviting, and it is perfect for sunbathing and swimming. The beach is also popular for wave sports, such as surfing and bodyboarding.

1. Walk on the Beach

Biddeford Pool's sandy beach is a great place to take a walk, especially if you're looking for a calm and relaxing spot. It's two miles long, extending from Biddeford Pool to Fortunes Rocks and offers plenty of space for swimming, playing and walking.

This 500-yard stretch of sand is located on the north side of Biddeford Pool near the mouth of the Saco River, and is protected by sand dunes on both sides. It's not very crowded and is popular with locals who can enjoy the tranquility of the beach without the crowds and traffic.

This area is also known for its spectacular views and hikes along the rocky coast, including East Point Sanctuary which offers great views of Wood Island Lighthouse, Stage Island and Old Orchard Beach. You can even kayak from this beach if you'd like to see some local wildlife or experience a serene paddle down the Saco River.

2. Visit the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

Named for world-renowned marine biologist Rachel Carson, the refuge is a place to connect with nature, explore the wetlands and trails or take in the incredible views. Open in all seasons, it’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery!

The refuge has an extensive trail network that is wheelchair accessible. Located along the southern coast of Maine, it is a protected area that is home to a variety of wildlife and habitats.

The refuge protects several important natural communities including coastal dune marsh, Spartina saltmarsh, white oak - red oak forest, dune grassland, pitch pine bog and maritime forest. The refuge is also home to an impressive array of migratory birds.

3. Take a Tour of the Wood Island Lighthouse

If you want to get an up-close look at the famous Wood Island Lighthouse, head to Biddeford Pool and board a boat for a trip to the island. From there, you'll have the chance to climb the tower and explore the keeper's home.

In a state known for its rugged coastline, keeping Maine's lighthouses in ship-shape is no small task. But for the past few years, volunteers from The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse have made it their mission to restore and maintain one of Maine's most historic lighthouses.

In addition to their ongoing restoration efforts, they also offer tours of the newly restored keeper's home and tower. These free tours are held in July and August and are led by volunteer guides.

4. Visit the Biddeford Art Walk

A self-guided art walk is a great way to enjoy all the different art venues and restaurants in Biddeford. These free events happen the third Friday of every month from May - October and feature local artists, businesses, and other venues exhibiting artwork.

A special art opening is being held during the upcoming ArtWalk on May 25 that features the work of four artists from the Art Certificate Program at Creative Trails. The show is the culmination of their hard work.

The downtown area in Biddeford is undergoing a big redevelopment, and it’s filled with historic buildings and new construction. It’s also attracting a growing number of restaurants and shops.

5. Grab a Pizza by Alex

For lunch or dinner, there’s no better way to start the day than with a slice of pizza from this Biddeford me mainstay that has been serving up New York-style pies since 1960. Whether you’re looking for the perfect plain pie, or something with a bit of a kick like their Greek-style char-grilled chicken, you’ll never go wrong here. It’s also a great place to pick up a bottle of wine or a cold beer and spend the evening with friends or family.
