There are plenty of things to do in Clare Michigan, and there's something for everyone. Whether you're looking for outdoor activities, shopping, or history, we've got it all!
The Doherty Hotel, a 157-room family-run establishment, is a must-visit for visitors to Clare. It has an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, and a 1,400-square-foot banquet/ conference room.
Clare is one of the many small towns in Michigan that have a lot to offer visitors. It is located halfway between the state's two largest cities, making it an excellent spot to explore all of the different things to do in Michigan.
Among the city's most interesting historic sights is the Doherty Hotel, which opened in 1924. Owner Alfred James Doherty decided to place his hotel in the center of town, rather than next to a railroad, because he believed that automobiles would be the transportation of the future.
The Doherty Hotel is also known for its ghostly apparitions, which can be seen around the hotel. Guests have reported hearing knocking and seeing an entity that is said to be Isaiah Leebove, who was killed here in 1938.
If you’re looking for a little outdoor fun, Shamrock Lake is the place to go. This 62-acre Michigan lake offers a variety of activities and attractions, from fishing to boating to swimming.
Decades ago, the lake was a popular spot for families to relax by the water. There were even swimming lessons and a concession stand.
Unfortunately, a flood in 1986 brought silt into the lake. To remedy this, the city of Clare started dredging the lake in 2013. The dredging process is relatively inexpensive and has resulted in silt levels that are more manageable. This is just the latest step in restoring Shamrock Lake to its former glory. Hopefully, this will lead to a more enjoyable recreational experience for residents and visitors alike.
Located in downtown Clare, Four Leaf Cider is an upscale three barrel microbrewery that also offers mead, wine and cider. It also has an outdoor seating area for its patrons to enjoy the weather.
In addition to the beer, Four Leaf Cider has an assortment of appetizers, sandwiches and burgers. The place is casual and mellow, so it’s a great destination for those seeking a good time.
The brewery’s taproom also has a full bar and a selection of Michigan-made hard cider. You can try their sweet tart apple cider or a classic Scrumpy hard cider, which they make with several different varieties of apples.
To top off your day of cider-and-doughnuts, you can go on a tour of the orchard. The family-owned farm and orchard is one of the oldest in the state, dating back to 1850. In November and December, it hosts a slew of activities, including a jeep wagon ride, hayrides and the chance to meet Santa and his bravest elves.
Bowling at Gateway Lanes and Lounge is a fun family activity. You can enjoy a few games of bowling at this 24 lane establishment, or you can enjoy the thrills of bowling while you dine or drink your way through their extensive menu. The best part is the friendly service and a slew of promotions and events, such as bowling and dinner specials and Friday night fun and games. You can also play a few rounds of pool in the ol' bar.
The best part is that the lanes are open for business until 5 pm on weekdays and 4 pm on weekends, which means you’re more likely to find a spot in this bowling renaissance. The place also does a mean mug of coffee. It may not be the biggest bowling center around, but it’s definitely one of the most popular in the area.
