Visitors can hike to the B-52 crash site on Elephant Mountain to pay their respects to a crew of Air Force pilots who perished in the area in 1963. The story of this tragedy is told at the museum.
Located on a peninsula in Moosehead Lake, Mount Kineo State Park is one of the region's most spectacular hiking destinations. The cliffs that rise 800 feet above the lake are impressive enough to give you vertigo, but the trails that lead to the summit are easy to moderate and offer stunning views of Northern Maine lakes and mountains.
The peninsula is also home to the reintroduced peregrine falcon population. These birds live on the cliffs and dive for prey in the waters below.
There are four hiking trails that loop around the peninsula to reach the summit. They are rated from easy to moderate, so just about anyone can enjoy them.
The hike to the summit takes you through a wooded area with plenty of shade. You'll then climb a precarious old fire tower converted into a viewing platform. You'll get breathtaking 360 degree views of Moosehead Lake, the surrounding mountains and the golf course below.

It also features a boat dock where you can board the Katahdin for a cruise of Moosehead Lake. It’s a fun way to learn about the area’s history while enjoying a leisurely day on the water.
A major preservation effort is underway to keep the historic steamboat Katahdin in working order for years to come. The boat is undergoing a five-year project to restore its deck and undercarriage.
In addition to a steamboat tour, Moosehead Marine Museum also hosts events and exhibits throughout the year. They offer family activities, food festivals, and more.
Frozen in Time Memorial, located in the woods near Greenville, Maine is a must see for anyone visiting the area. This is not just a cool looking monument, but it also offers several unique activities and attractions for you to check out during your visit.
The most notable feature is the wreckage of a Boeing B-52. This aircraft crashed on a training mission in January 1963, killing seven crew members. The crash site has been preserved in the form of a memorial.
The site is about an 8 mile hike away from Greenville, Maine and the trip is well worth the effort. Make sure to bring a good map and compass along with plenty of water for the adventure.
