things to do in solana beach

Whether you are looking to escape from the busy city or experience the calmer side of things, there is plenty to do in Solana Beach.

The beaches in Solana Beach are very pretty and are perfect for laying out a blanket or enjoying the sun. You can also enjoy the outdoor activities at Fletcher Cove Beach Park.

1. Visit the Beaches

Solana Beach has a variety of beaches nestled against the sandstone cliffs. These are not as well known to San Diegans and tourists as the beaches in La Jolla Shores, but they are beautiful.

Fletcher Cove (also known as the Pillbox) is one of the best beaches in the area. Located at the west end of Lomas Santa Fe Drive, it has easy access, parking, restrooms and showers.

You can also take a short walk from the beach to check out Fletcher Park, which has grassy areas, playgrounds, a basketball court and restrooms. It is a great place to watch sunsets and is the site of the popular annual Fiesta Del Sol festival.

2. Go Whale Watching

Seeing whales is a thrilling experience and something you'll never forget. California is known as one of the best places in the world to spot whales, especially gray whales on their annual migration from Alaska to Baja.

To get the best view of these gentle giants, consider going on a whale watching tour, but you can also find a few spots on land that offer fantastic views.

Shoreline whale watching is possible from Cabrillo National Monument, Torrey Pines Glider Port, Ellen Browning Scripps Park above La Jolla Cove and Sunset Cliffs in Solana Beach, according to Domenic Biagini of San Diego Whale Watch.

3. Visit the San Diego Zoo

A day at the San Diego Zoo can be a lot of fun for the whole family. However, you need to plan ahead and use a map to make sure you see all of the top attractions.

This is because the San Diego Zoo is very hilly and back-tracking can get exhausting fast. To avoid this, make a list of the top places you want to see and then plot out your route on the zoo’s map.

One way to save your energy is to take the Skyfari Aerial Tram. It’s a quick ride and offers spectacular views of the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park.

4. Take a Cruise

When you’re looking for a way to get out on the water and explore San Diego Bay, consider taking a cruise. These are a great way to see the sights, and often include an informative narration from your captain.

There are many different types of tours to choose from, including standard sightseeing cruises with live narration and more exclusive experiences like jet boat rides, whale watching excursions, and dinner cruises.

One of the most popular options is the 3-Hour Sunset Sail. This harbor tour takes you around to some of the most notable landmarks on both land and offshore, as well as offers gorgeous sunset views. This is a great option for those on vacation or celebrating a special occasion.

5. Shop on Cedros Avenue

A collection of 85 one-of-a-kind shops along a two-block stretch, Cedros Avenue Design District has everything from home decor to clothing and jewelry. It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

The quaint and unique street features mom-and-pop stores and boutiques. Several of them sell high-end, designer goods that you won’t find in the malls.

The street also boasts weekly farmer’s markets, plus a food court and coffee shop. And if you’re looking for live music, head to Belly Up Tavern, a well-known concert venue, or the Wild Note Cafe next door.

6. Go to Belly Up

If you want to experience some live music, then Belly Up is the place to go. The venue has been a big name on the San Diego music scene for years, and they are always bringing in big-name artists to perform.

This venue has been open since 1974 and has seen a ton of music legends come through the walls. They have hosted artists from all over the world and are well-respected by both performers and fans.
