It was built in 1854 by local dentist William Fuller. He later sold it to Lewis Moore, a lieutenant colonel in the Fourth Virginia Volunteers.

The house is a National Historic Landmark and contains hundreds of Civil War artifacts from Jackson's time in Winchester. Among them are a camp table and prayer book that were taken into the field with Jackson.
