Top Gun is all about jets and flying, but cool cars also make a big impression in the two-film franchise. Besides the F-14s and Kawasaki bikes that steal the show, one of the most memorable cars in the movie is actually a 1973 Porsche 911S. Owned by Penny, Maverick’s new love interest in the sequel, the silver 911S wasn’t seen a whole lot on screen but still had a significant impact on car enthusiasts.
When Kelly McGillis’ Charlie zoomed around San Diego in the 1986 original, she was behind the wheel of a black 1958 Porsche Speedster, which is now worth well over $200,000. But for the 2022 sequel, writer/director Joseph Kosinski decided to use an actual Porsche 911 S as the main car, a 1971 model with a tangerine orange exterior and matching interior. That particular 911 S has the more desirable air-cooled flat six engine that’s a hallmark of Porsches, which are considered “OG” models in the collector community.
During the filming of Top Gun: Maverick, the Porsche was driven by Jennifer Connelly, who plays Penny. As a local bartender and mother to Maverick’s kid, she’s an accomplished and well-rounded character who also loves cars. But her screen time with the Porsche was fairly short, and she only drove the car during a high-speed chase down a winding road. Luckily, she didn’t need to do any of the stunt work herself; the car was driven by a professional driver.
