A hollow structural section (HSS) is a steel profile with a circular, square, or rectangular cross-section. It is often used in construction or engineering projects for columns, beams, and trusses. HSS is also used in architectural designs to create visually pleasing aesthetic effects.

HSS is made from cold-formed carbon steel and can be welded or hot-rolled. It’s typically manufactured by a process called electric-resistance welding (ERW), which involves simultaneously applying pressure and an electric current to melt and weld the steel together. The resulting weld is an extremely strong joint that has no gaps or cracks.

When designing HSS connections, it’s important to consider the local strength of the structure. This is determined by the side-wall yielding, chord-wall classification, and flexibility of the face of the HSS. The shear through plate connection is a common example of a design that requires this.
