What Does the ABS Light on a Car Mean?

December 5, 2023

There’s nothing worse than a pesky little icon suddenly showing up in your car’s dashboard display. Even more so when it’s a warning light related to one of your vehicle’s most critical safety systems. If your car’s ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) light has illuminated, it can mean a number of things, but whatever it is, you should take it seriously.

Every time you start your vehicle, the ABS light comes on momentarily as part of a self-check system. However, if this light remains on or illuminates while you’re driving, that means there is a problem with the system. This may be as simple as the brake fluid reservoir needing to be topped off, or it could be more serious such as a faulty sensor or control module.

Electrical issues are among the most common reasons that this indicator light will turn on. This can be as easy as a broken wire or as complex as a faulty wheel speed sensor or control module. This is why it’s important to perform routine maintenance and get regular inspections, so these types of problems are less likely to occur.

If your ABS light is on, you should take it to a reputable mechanic as soon as possible for diagnosis and repair. These experts will be able to use a special diagnostic scanner to read the codes stored in the ABS module and pinpoint the problem. This helps them to fix it quickly and accurately.
