What is a Passive Car Alarm?

March 3, 2024

A car alarm is a security device installed in a vehicle to discourage theft. It typically consists of a siren, sensors, and a control panel. The alarm will sound when the sensors detect movement or unauthorized access to the vehicle, alerting the owner and deterring potential perpetrators. The control panel is used to configure the type of siren noise that will be emitted, adjust the sensitivity of the sensors, and activate or deactivate the system. Some alarms may also be equipped with a tracking device, such as LoJack, that will allow owners to locate their vehicles in the event of a theft.

Passive Car Alarm

There are many different types of car alarm systems on the market, and they all vary in their features and functionality. The most important thing to consider is the level of protection that you are looking for. Passive and active systems are the two most common options, but there are also hybrid versions that combine passive and active functions for an even more secure experience.

Passive alarms are a popular option for drivers that are seeking maximum protection for their vehicles. These alarms automatically activate once the key is removed from the ignition and all doors are closed, providing round-the-clock protection against unauthorized access and theft attempts. The fact that the driver doesn’t need to manually arm the system removes the risk of forgetfulness, which can result in accidental “set-offs” of your own alarm (think running back to get your jacket after unloading groceries).

While active systems are convenient, they require the driver to actively engage them before leaving their vehicle. This can be a hassle, especially for drivers that frequently make trips into their vehicle to unload items or load up their trunk.
