It also cites its ability to be easily fabricated, transported and handled on the job site, and that it provides superior corrosion resistance.

The STISA website explains that HSS is also more efficient than wide-flange sections because it is lighter, which reduces material costs and saves energy. In addition, it has more torsional strength than other types of steel. HSS is also more dimensionally accurate, which cuts down on installation time. Finally, because it’s rolled and produced in the United States, it’s easier to get the size you need for your project.

HSS is a type of carbon steel that is cold-formed and welded to form hollow structural sections, or tubes. It is available in a variety of shapes, sizes and thicknesses. The most common HSS specification in the US is ASTM A500, and most domestically produced HSS meets this standard.

HSS is typically made using electric-resistance welded processes, which involves welding each side of the tube while applying pressure and an electrical current simultaneously. However, it can also be made using a seamless process, where the tube is formed and then welded together. Both methods are common, but the welded process is more commonly used. HSS tubes are often filled with concrete for fire-rated applications. The concrete confines the steel to prevent it from expanding and enhances its fire-retardant properties.
