Hohhot (Mongolian script: ะพ, Mongolian Cyrillic: Khokeqota Hoh hot) is the capital of Inner Mongolia in the People's Republic of China and serves as the region's administrative, economic, and cultural center. It is also the largest city in the province. The name of the city is derived from two Mongolian words, hoh meaning "blue" and hot meaning "city". During the transition period from the Ming to the Qing Dynasty (17th century) when the Mongolians were replaced by the Manchus, the old Mongol City was renamed to Kuku-khoto and a new Chinese City called Suiyuan was built nearby. Although commercial activities were carried out between the cities, they remained spiritually separate with each having its own city god.

The city is now home to a diverse population of over 2.4 million. It is primarily made up of the Hui people but has minority nationality groups that include the Mongols, Manchus and Ewenki. Traditional religions such as Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism) and Islam thrive in the city.

Long-distance buses connect the city to outlying counties and the cities of Baotou and Ordos in Inner Mongolia. There are also major railway links to the south and northeast, and a domestic airport about an hour's drive from downtown Hohhot.
