Where Is Area Code 986

What Is Area Code 986?

Area Code 986 serves the state of Idaho and is an overlay of area code 208. It entered service in 2016 as the second statewide overlay. It is a new way to dial a local phone number for all residents of Idaho.

The 208/986 Area Code Overlay Was Officially Put into Service on November 5, 2016. This means that all calls in the 208/986 area code will require 10-digit dialing (area code + 7-digit telephone number). Calls currently made with seven digits will not be completed.

All existing PBXs, fax machines, VOIP, Internet dial-up numbers, alarm and security systems, gate controls, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, voicemail services and other equipment that is programmed with a 7-digit number must be changed to 10-digit dialing.

Most People Can Get Used to the Change in a Short While

If you live in Idaho and are concerned about how to get used to the new 986 area code, there is good news. The Public Utilities Commission announced on Monday that the new code will be implemented as a statewide "geographic overlay." This means that all new numbers will be issued a 986 area code.

There are several benefits to having a local telephone number, especially if you have many family members or friends living in different places. Having a local phone number can also give you a competitive edge in business and marketing.

Regardless of the reason you are looking for a new number, you can easily find and add a local 208 or 986 number with Dialpad. It's easy to sign up for a free 14-day trial and set up your new number in just minutes!
