Ridley Scott is set to direct a new medieval thriller, The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. With a long resume of historic epics to his name, including Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and The Duellists, Scott brings a raft of experience to the project.
During the filming, some of the most majestic and well-preserved castles in France served as backdrops for the action. With help from Academy Award-nominated production designer Arthur Max, some of the film’s most iconic castles were meticulously restored and brought to life.
As for the jousting scenes, Max began prepping them six months before principal photography. Based on surviving court documents and author Eric Jager’s book, The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France, he worked with models and pre-viz to better visualize how the scenes would play out.
In addition to France, The Last Duel also shot in Ireland. Kells Priory, a national monument in Kilkenny County, was scouted as one possible location for the medieval action.
The Last Duel is a movie that has a lot of history and drama to offer. With a stellar cast and an epic storyline, fans are likely to fall in love with this new film.
