Why Does My Car Sound Like a Motorcycle?

November 19, 2023

Motorcycles have a unique sound that is instantly recognizable. So, when your car starts to make noise that sounds like a motorcycle it can be incredibly disconcerting and it should be looked at by a professional as soon as possible.

Some of the most common reasons why your car is generating motorcycle noise are due to damage to the engine, belts, or exhaust system. If you continue to drive your car while it is making this type of noise it could cause more damage and be unsafe for you and other drivers on the road.

Damage to the Exhaust System

Your vehicle’s exhaust system carries the hot gaseous fumes from your engine out through the tail pipe, and it is made up of pipes, mufflers, and more. If any of these components are damaged or have holes it can produce a loud motorcycle-like noise, especially when you accelerate your car.

Other causes of your car making motorcycle noises include a broken fan belt, bad spark plugs, misaligned gears, or a malfunctioning transfer case. These problems need to be fixed by a professional as soon as you notice them, otherwise they will likely get worse over time and cause further issues with your car.

Some cars are more receptive to this problem, including models such as the Mazda Miata, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corolla. This is due to the fact that these vehicles have 4-cylinder engines located close to the ground, which can easily produce rumbling noises.
