For many Chevy Silverado 1500 owners, dealing with the frustrating question of why does my Stabilitrak keep coming on and off can be a persistent issue. Specifically, a common problem arises when the traction control and Stabilitrak systems spontaneously deactivate, displaying a service message. This scenario often occurs in models like the 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500, especially those with around 124,000 miles on the clock.
The culprit behind the Stabilitrak malfunction is frequently traced back to a faulty steering wheel position sensor. This sensor plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the Stabilitrak system. One way to confirm a faulty sensor is by performing sharp turns or u-turns in an empty lot—if the issue persists, the sensor is likely the problem. Located at the base of the steering column, replacing the sensor can be a straightforward DIY task, typically requiring about an hour with basic tools. In some cases, torx bits might be needed to remove the plate that holds the sensor.
When tackling the issue of why does my Stabilitrak keep coming on and off, it is also important to carefully inspect the wiring for any potential problems that might affect the sensor’s function. Using an original AC Delco steering wheel position sensor is highly recommended for the best results. While aftermarket replacements can be tempting due to a lower cost, they are often inconsistent, leading to potential repeat failures. By choosing OE parts, you can ensure a more reliable resolution.
